HISTORY OF AFFIRM FILMS
AFFIRM Films was established to meet the growing demand for faith-forward storytelling, beginning in 2006 when Sony released its first faith-based theatrical film, Facing the Giants. Directed by the Kendrick Brothers, the film grossed more than $10 million at the domestic box office, signaling a strong and underserved audience.
Building on that success, the AFFIRM Films label launched officially in 2007. AFFIRM then co-produced, marketed, and distributed the Kendrick Brothers’ follow-up film, Fireproof, in 2008. The film became a breakout hit, earning over $33 million worldwide and firmly establishing faith-based films as a viable and in-demand theatrical genre.
In 2011, AFFIRM Films experienced a landmark year with the releases of Soul Surfer, The Grace Card, and Courageous, which collectively generated more than $80 million at the domestic box office. These successes further solidified AFFIRM’s position as a leader in inspirational filmmaking.
AFFIRM continued its momentum in the years that followed. In 2014, the label released the Erwin Brothers’ comedy Moms’ Night Out, the sports drama When the Game Stands Tall—inspired by the true story of the De La Salle Spartans—and the apocalyptic thriller The Remaining.
In addition to producing and distributing its own films, AFFIRM served as the faith-based marketing partner for Columbia Pictures’ Heaven Is for Real and Miracles from Heaven. The label continued to deliver powerful theatrical hits with the Kendrick Brothers’ next film, War Room, which hit #1 at the domestic box office and went on to gross $73 million worldwide. In 2016 Risen, starring Joseph Fiennes brought in another $46 million worldwide.
AFFIRM Films released All Saints in August 2017, followed by the animated feature The Star in November 2017, in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures. In 2018, Paul, Apostle of Christ, starring Jim Caviezel, opened in theaters. The following year, the highly anticipated Kendrick Brothers film Overcomer debuted nationwide on August 23, 2019, earning a rare A+ CinemaScore from audiences. That same year, AFFIRM partnered with TriStar Pictures to release A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks.
Expanding beyond film, AFFIRM Films partnered with Sony Pictures Television in late 2019 to launch AFFIRM Television. The division focuses on family-friendly, faith-based, inspirational, and aspirational scripted television series and currently has multiple projects in development.
In 2021, AFFIRM Originals was created as a label for releasing series and films produced to premiere on the Pureflix streaming platform. Series included Going Home (Season 1 & 2), Karen Kingsbury’s A Thousand Tomorrows, A Show About Anthem Lights, Live+Local, Finding Faith in Film, Shadrach, and Eleanor’s Bench. Feature Films included Legacy Peak, Moonrise, Birthright and Sun Moon.
Big George Foreman was released in theaters in partnership with Columbia Pictures in 2023 followed up by the release of the epic Christmas musical Journey to Bethlehem. In 2024, the much-anticipated Kendrick Brothers film The Forge was released theatrically worldwide.
AFFIRM Films’ newest film Soul On Fire, based on the book On Fire written by John O’Leary about his inspirational journey that would inspire millions - exclusively hit theaters nationally in the fall of 2025.
